The visuals from the lastest T&B: The Rising trailer are really striking… and suggest some really interesting things about the movie plot, about Stern Bild itself, and the world’s backstory.

We’re told that “Long ago, in a time when mankind knew nothing of true Justice, a goddess built a small village on the land of Stern Bild.” The creators have stated elsewhere that the various mythology-influenced statues around the city are linked to its history, but I assumed that was in a figurative sense; I mean, it’s not like the American colonies were liberated from England by a giant robed woman carrying a torch. But it looks like Stern Bild actually has a foundation myth, and the statues are more on the Salt Lake City seagull or Mexican flag/founding of Tenochtitlan end of the literalism scale.

Which is interesting, because…

Stern Bild also seems to have Ouroboros right at its roots.
Given that ouroboros is a symbol of infinity and rebirth, that could explain why it’s built into the city’s outline and watermarked on the money, and it’s not like the ouroboros is an inherently sinister symbol… but how’d the name end up on the evil organization within the show, in that case? The tone of the trailer certainly suggests it’s time for another smiting of the unrighteous.
Also interesting: That ‘smiting the wicked’ scenario from the trailer sounds pretty mythic and Biblical…

but it looks, from the clothing and level of technology, like it took place in the eighteenth or nineteenth century, or at least Stern Bild’s equivalent to it.

I have nothing conclusive at the end of all this, just happiness that we’re getting some worldbuilding. I’d sort of assumed that the apocalyptic tone of the earlier trailer was about a giant showdown with Ouroboros, without the literal wrath of Goddess entering the picture (so basically Dark Knight Rises) and this is unexpected and potentially really cool. They haven’t let me down yet, anyway.

Meanwhile, I can’t decide what’s getting submerged here; the current city and its statues and skyscrapers, or an earlier incarnation, or real horses, or what?
