I've pretty much packed up and moved to Tumblr, but I think of Yuletide as an LJ/Dreamwidth thing, so I figure I'll crosspost or just post here only about all of that.

The part people actually care about first: I nominated FF6, because hope springs eternal; Suikoden III; and Justice League/JLU, despite the crazy-making organization of the DC tags on AO3.  Whether I can participate is going to depend on how many of those get approved (and whether Young Justice, which I didn't nominate, makes it) and how I'm feeling at the time, because I've never written for either of the superhero cartoons and I'm really rusty on the Suikoverse.

Beneath the cut, pre-nomination natter. )

Birthday visit to Little Tokyo was expensively fruitful. Little Tokyo loot haul. )

Unfortunately, this weekend was the heirloom tomato festival at a farm stand near my house, which is unfortunate because I just remembered to check today and it rained all day at what, for Los Angeles, amounts to a downpour.  Should have thought to look on Friday.  I haz a sad.

I should finish up the Ireland post, but maybe tomorrow - I've finally broken through jetlag-induced writer's block and I've been ficcing all day.

miscellany

Feb. 27th, 2012 12:43 pm
liri: (YAY!)
Things going on:

Two weeks from now we will be in Ireland!  If past history with extended travel is any indication, I will obsessively document the whole journey in photos and a paper journal, then, on my return, post one jet-lagged "I will post about the trip later" update and never actually succeed in doing so.  Maybe I'll break my streak this time!  We will be traveling with an actual doctor, so I have hopes we'll manage the jet lag reasonably well, though her advice currently has us using over-the-counter melatonin.

As of my fourth week of my internship, it still doesn't make me want to die!  That's more than I can say about all my previous non-library jobs!  The time I worked in accounting I wanted to die after the very first day!

I just completed a fic that came out in Word to 48k words.  The last time I wrote something anywhere near that long it took me seven years. To be fair, those years included: the completion of my undergraduate degree, two substantial moves, one of those across country, three jobs, four residences, three computers, the beginning of my relationship with my now-husband, moving in with him, our engagement, and the beginning of my graduate degree.  BUT STILL, this fic took like four percent of that time.  And OMG OMG I FINISHED A THING!
liri: (Tiger & Bunny)
Getting a head start on next year's writing meme: I think I can safely list "trying to simultaneously write three fics that will call for action scenes, one of which will also call for some measure of plot beyond the usual 'people talk to each other and/or make out'" under the "writing risks" header.  WHAT THE HELL, self, surely you know better!

In which Tiger & Bunny fanfic leads to free-association rants about Marvel comics. Also, I really hate Colossus a whole bunch. )
liri: Greatfather Winter (Winter Veil)
So, Yuletide.

I meant to post this the day of reveals, but thanks to (minor) head injuries and the fact I was visiting friends, I got delayed.  I only have the one fic - I meant to write treats but the time kind of got away from me - and because my initial reaction was not "oh AWESOME" I didn't dare to post anything about my prompt, or my feelings on writing it, until I was (a) satisfied with it and ready for it to be seen, and (b) had seen my recipient's reaction.

Detail about the fic itself )

Despite my anxiety starting out (I roped in [personal profile] quicksilver_ink as a beta before I even started writing) writing it was a great experience, and I'm really glad I had the chance to do so. I really hope the reveal that this was by a non-shipper didn't privately ruin it for her.

Finally finished the writing meme!  I think I got it from [personal profile] wallwalker?

Fic meme )

In other news, I've been playing Dragon Age: Origins, and I'm pleased to report that the voice acting (and my computer's discomfort with the graphics, maybe?) is winning out over the Uncanny Valley.  Yay!  Now to sex up Alistair.  True story: When I told Ben and Lucia I had the game, Lucia's first question was "did you sleep with Alistair yet?"  Not yet, but I'm trying!
liri: (Terra and roses)
Meme!  Snagged from [personal profile] owlmoose, I believe.

Fandom meme )

And stuff about writing, though I haven't seen an organized meme for it:

I've posted 49 fics this year, not counting incomplete meme fills, amounting to 48k words written in seven fandoms. Compared to my none at all written in 2010, that's pretty good! Madoka Magica was my busiest in terms of number of fics posted, but that does include a lot of drabbles. Then again, my second-highest, FFVI, does as well. I don't actually want to break it down by word count per fandom. This was the first year I ever wrote f/f or m/m fic of any kind, and the first time since 2003 I've actually picked up a new fandom to write for, let alone two. They're  somewhat different media, too, since I've mostly written for games.  I've also found myself approaching fic in different ways, which I may ramble about later.

recs!

So here are the fic recs/commentary/etc.

Mine! )
Man, I don't know what I'm going to do next year, when T&B will almost certainly not qualify, and FFVI might not.

Tiger & Bunny recs )
Other anime/manga/gaming: FFVI, Antique Bakery, Madoka Magica, World of Warcraft )
Other: Fairytale of New York and Connie Willis's Oxford Time Travel-verse )

I'm not very good at writing recs, I don't think, and I should probably add the caveat that I haven't read every single thing in every fandom represented - WoW had multiple Thassarian/Koltira fics I haven't touched, for instance - but these were all amazing.
liri: An orc cookie attacks gnome cookies (cookies!)
I am actually signed up for Yuletide!  Regrettably, I don't think I'll finish FF4 DS in time to edit my signups... I suppose I could just throw FF4 in there anyway, on faith that I *will* be able to finish it before stories are due, but I dunno.  At the rate I'm progressing, I'm not sure it's safe to assume that I can.

Cut for a bit of a rant about the Sealed Cave, and general thoughts on the game. )

Anyway.  It's kind of neat to look at the Yuletide signups, if also puzzling - wth, other people want to write fanfic about a Vocaloid song?  Really?  I'm also surprised so many people are offering to write FF6 fic, so far.  T&B is, unsurprisingly, the most popular of the ones I'm concerned with, both in offers and requests.  Suiko III is weirdly kind of low, so far - weird because going by the number of nominated characters, at least three people nominated it, which is more than have requested or offered it.  Madoka Magica only looked to have one request.

After spending some time kvetching about the good old Pit on f_fa, I decided, for reasons even I cannot fathom, to upload some fics over there again, and browse the areas where I was uploading.  And... for some reason, the Pit's T&B section is basically just a porn-free version of AO3's T&B section, and I proceeded to get reviews that contained complete sentences and urged me to continue the fic I was planning to continue!  I like the T&B section now!  The less said about the MadoMagi section the better, though.
liri: Hatsune Miku (Vocaloid)
I figured, as long as I'm rummaging around on Youtube to link them for my Yuletide nomination...

Oh yes, Yuletide. I nominated FF6 (Terra, Locke, Celes, and Cyan) and PMMM (Mami, Sayaka, Kyoko, Homura.) The four-character limit meant I had to leave Madoka herself out in the cold, along with way too many FF6 characters.

My third nomination was a song. Embedded videos behind the cut. )
Also, unrelatedly, I posted another Madoka fanart meta at [community profile] frillsofjustice.

liri: (Madoka and Homura)
The kitten has returned from the vet, spayed and in good spirits.  She's currently re-exploring the house in case things have changed overnight.  I, meanwhile, await the resolution of Schrodinger's Spoiler in Tiger & Bunny, which is, I believe, airing in Japan right now, so I can't risk looking at Pixiv for the next four hours.

So instead I'll talk about Madoka Magica, my other recent fandom.

...mostly about fanfic and reviews, actually. Spoilers for the whole series. )

Okay, this all took me long enough that Tiger & Bunny has presumably finished airing.  MUST NOT LOOK AT PIXIV.

I've been watching Princess Tutu through means probably best not disclosed, and Avatar: The Last Airbender through Netflix.  The husband's obsession with it was enough to overcome the foot-dragging about subscribing that he'd been doing for well over a year.  Every so often he'll announce his latest estimate of how many kinds of awesome Iroh currently is; I think 40,000 was the latest tally.  He's well ahead of me.  I'm using it as my new workout show, which is a nice incentive to actually get on the exercise bike, but I'm still just on the first season.

Thoughts so far:

A:TLA )

Princess Tutu )

Merc, you magnificent bastard, I saw your Cleopatra PMMM prompt.
liri: (Locke x Terra)
I'm bowing out of the FF6 discussion on Merc's post because I'm reaching the point of "ARGH ARGH ARGH GODDAMMIT" and, well, that's not very festive. Or communicative. It's not like everyone has to see it my way (though that sure would be nice sometimes) but I've reached the point where I can't rest until I say my piece.

So, here's the Locke/Celes/Terra manifesto.
Unsurprisingly, it's long. )

In WoW, I'm going to drop the campaign to transfer servers - much as I would love to get Rauny on a server where the plans for the Belt of the Guardian and Boots of the Protector have dropped enough that they get put on the AH, I'd rather play with Mal and Dal, and they're back! And we finally got around to leaving the guild after the weird "All Dwarf Rogues Act Like That, I Guess" debacle. I'll post a screencap in a locked post.

Edited to add: CESARE BORGIA urges the youth of America to read!
liri: (Default)
I am really, really, really (really really) intrigued by Warhammer Online. Like, "do I sign up for closed beta?" intrigued. DUDE. You can't see the navels on ANY of those women! NOT ONE! I mean, I took off Rauny's tabard when she got a cute belly-shirt chestpiece, I don't always mind the unrealistic armor in WoW, but this looks badass. Anyone with me on this?

Speaking of navels, I love Buso Renkin. (It makes sense if you've read the latest volume...) Kazuki/Tokiko OTP. I should have picked up the Yamaguchirow Buso Renkin books back when they were cheap.

LJfind seems to be down right now, and I know it freaked people out, but all I found when I searched myself was mentions of me on my boyfriend's journal, my name in "random names from your flist" memes, and two strangers reccing my fics. I am all about this! More surprise recs plz!
