So apparently it's good that I never install Windows security updates in a timely manner... a Microsoft patch has fucked up the internet for Zonealarm users, which explains what happened to teh boyfriend's laptop this evening. Zonealarm has suggestions here, though he said he updated the firewall (once he disabled it so as to get online in the first place) and it didn't help. So the usefulness of this to anyone else is up in the air, but meh.
