We pick up where we left off. Kaede is in the room with Rotwang, apparently. Kotetsu and Barnaby's powers have not yet recharged. H-01, the fake!Tiger, pulls out a gun and starts shooting at them. Saito tried to do science to it, figuring that what with the involvement of Barnaby's parents, it should have a safety feature to keep it from harming humans that might kick in if he reboots it. Man, it would be awesome if the science guy could defeat it!
At a meeting of the executives, Yuri flashes back to his confrontation with H-01 (he was injured.) Maverick joins a meeting of the executives and bullshits about the heroes trying to protect the city. Yuri ponders him. Is Yuri going to kill Maverick so we can all relish his flamey death without any of the heroes getting their hands dirty? It's a trope I normally resent, but Maverick SO needs to die.
The imprisoned heroes are watching T&B fight H-01, which is not going swimmingly. Antonio's button-finger starts itching. He resists, but as Keith ponders the same problem, Rotwang lets all the others see him thinking out loud that it would be better for one of them to survive than none. They yell at him, then the link is cut. GODDAMN, Rotwang.
The duo have their powers back. GUYS YOU DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME DON'T JUST STAND THERE POSING. Maverick and Rotwang are evil at each other a bit more. T&B engage Good Luck Mode, knock H-01 down, and jubilate like they actually harmed it. I may have said "guys, it's a robot," out loud there. It gets up and attacks with a lightsaber.
The captives watch them get tossed around for a bit, then Blue Rose gives a speech about trusting T&B. Rotwang channels Kefka for a sec (Trust? Heart? ICK.) Kaede is planning something! GO KAEDE. She's still got Blue Rose's ice power, and for some unaccountable reason her cuffs appear to be made of leather rather than metal.
Oh no. Kotetsu grabs H-01 and tells Barnaby to shoot it with its own laser. He claims he can dodge the blast. KOTETSU YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DIE. Bunny shoots, and there's a giant explosion. BARNABY IF YOU HAVE KILLED YOUR BOYFRIEND I WILL HAVE TO WRITE SO MANY FICS FIXING THIS IT IS NOT EVEN FUNNY. NOW YOU GO TO YOUR ROOM AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE DONE.
The blast actually goes out of the statue's eye. Far, far below it, in a festively-decorated area, an ad featuring a pink bunny in a Santa hat plays as Scarf Girl talks to... another girl in a scarf.
Barnaby breathes heavily. H-01 IS NOT EVEN KNOCKED DOWN. TIGER WHERE ARE YOU. Or.. H-01 has had its whole upper half blown off, and then it explodes. TIGER DO NOT BE DEAD, DO YOU HEAR ME, TIGER? IF YOU ARE DEAD I WILL KILL YOU. The other heroes are amazed, Rotwang is peeved, decides to blow the heroes up manually... and Kaede iceshis iPhone the detonator out of his hand. She's already iced her guard, and then she freezes Rotwang. ILU KAEDE. So does everyone, as their bomb collars loosen. They break out.
Barnaby... OH SHIT KOTETSU NO YOU CANNOT DIE. I CANNOT RECAP. KOTETSU STAY ALIVE!
THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR THE STAND UP TO CANCER AD HULU. STFU ABOUT CANCER.
GODDAMMIT SHOW. DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT. YOU CANNOT KILL KOTETSU. I CANNOT EVEN BE HAPPY ABOUT HOW SHIPPY THAT SCENE WAS. SHIPPY DEATH SCENES ARE WRONG.
Post-credits sting has Ben and Saito noticing the disappearance of Kotetsu's signal, and then everyone running happily up to find Barnaby crying over Kotetsu. The next-episode blurb is very subdued. I cannot even be happy about Barnaby dishing out a beating to Maverick. What's the point of wanting a second season if Kotetsu's dead? I want to hope it's a fakeout, but it really, really does not feel like a fakeout. I've seen enough beloved characters killed off. Fushigi Yuugi was one of my first series.
What the hell do I have to DO to find an anime that won't fatally split up the pairings I ship? Where is Nobuhiro Watsuki when I need him?
